Idag noterar vi att “the Finnish male is very prone to self-pity”, vilket idag känns som ett sanningsenligt påstående. Vad är den här grejen med att hålla på och tycka synd om sig själv hela tiden?

Glad midsommar på er!

Nu kommer det här inte vara midsommarrelaterat alls, men ibland när man lägger ner mycket jobb på något till synes menlöst måste man ju få dela med sig lite. Imorgon ska jag och se på när min gode amerikanske vän Alan ska göra sitt master thesis defense. Hans tes handlar om metallåtervinning och jag vet inte riktigt vad det handlar om. Men Alan är en skön dude så jag tänkte glida dit iallafall.

Jag tackade ja till hans event på fejan och skrev följande svar:

I’ll bring my Rocky IV vinyl soundtrack!

Jag har nämligen införskaffat för en (1) europeng (€) soundtracket till den episka filmkampen mellan civilingenjören i kemiteknik Dolph Lundgren och skådespelaren Sylvester Stallone. Alan kontrade genast med följande:

can you play some intro music when I come in covered in an American flag? and
some outro music after I prove that the US is superior to Russia

Och givetvis har jag nu spenderat en timme av mitt liv på att svara som svaras bör på en sådan request:

Wow! I thought you were going to talk about metal recycling, but this will probably be more exciting than I thought then if you’re going to prove the superiority of the US!

I had a few thoughts at first:

Bruce Springsteen – Born in the USA
James Brown – Living in America
Ennio Morricone – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Well, I know he is Italian, but Clint is about as American as you can get so that could’ve worked!)

But then I thought that if we start by playing the Star Spangled Banner and then somehow fade it into this video (with better sound quality), just the introduction of your presentation alone will give your thesis defense an 11 out of 10. Yes you heard me right, there son. (Really need to remove stupid message at the end also though.)

And in the end, after you’ve presented your thesis, I suggest that you end the presentation gloriously with an amazing version of Sweet Home Alabama by the Finnish band Leningrad Cowboys live from Helsinki 1994 at their “Total Balalaika Show” together with the Alexandrov Ensamble (formerly known as the Red Army Choir) performed in front of a crowd of 70.000 people in central Helsinki. One of the largest concerts in Finnish history.

To me it symbolizes the everlasting bond between Finland and America showing that together we can bring freedom to Russia. Freedom isn’t free though. Not to forget.

AND:

In the middle of your presentation, to add some structure to the presentation, I suggest that you show a few of these amazing clips from Rocky IV. I always use these clips in my presentations to give them a bit more action and edge.

The training montage (the second half is better when Heart’s on Fire starts). This can be used as a motivational video or to show the differences between Russia and the US:

If you want to show what a difficult obstacle that faced you in the start of your thesis, this Ivan Drago tribute is amazing and makes everyone understand what magnitude of danger you were facing (this is a must watch!):

And then of course, the final fight between Balboa and Drago, the epic battle between US and Russia. Not as good as the other two clips, but definitely worth watching. This is a great clip to show before your conclusions, because then you can basically end the presentation by saying something like “Q.E.D. bitch!” or similar. That will be enough:

Hej bloggen.

Inte mycket nytt material här. Så här bjuder jag på lite gammalt material istället. Tyckte att jag var så finurlig när jag lyckades citera en av mina favoritkomiker Doug Stanhope i en inlämningsuppgift på mastersnivå så här kommer den. Fick inte så bra betyg som jag tyckte jag förtjänade (eller ja, i jämförelse med mina vänner som tog random Al Gore-quotes haha), men att få klämma in ett kul citat är alltid värt ett litet betygstapp istället för att skriva något högtravande mumbojumbo som jag ändå inte stått för haha.

A truly inconvenient truth

One of the performances that have affected me the most regarding global warming and environmental issues is from a 2½ minute sketch by the controversial American comedian Doug Stanhope where he talks about overpopulation[1]. The sketch features Stanhope sitting on a porch talking about the mere fact that not even Al Gore seems interested in mentioning overpopulation as a problem when it in fact is one of the biggest threats to our planet.

Using his typical vulgar language, Stanhope describes how it is easy for media to give tips on how to cut the plastic six-pack holders to pieces before throwing them in the garbage to prevent them from choking animals and also how easy it is to stop the stream of water when brushing your teeth. At the same time he mentions that no media would ever tell people about not having children, because that is a subject that no one wants to hear about.

Stanhope then mentions a study from Oregon State University[2] that makes the claim that “…a woman in the United States who adopted the six non-reproductive changes […] would save about 486 tons of CO2 emissions during her lifetime, but, if she were to have two children, this would eventually add nearly 40 times that amount of CO2 (18,882 t) to the earth’s atmosphere” whereas the six non-reproductive changes are changing type of car, decreasing mileage, switching to double-glazed windows, recycling materials, switching light bulb types and replacing an old refrigerator type.

Making small changes in your lifestyle to decrease your carbon emissions is one thing, trying to tackle the problems with overpopulation is a completely different thing. The quote that made me most baffled is the second last sentence of Stanhope’s performance stating that

“[if] you don’t have the baby you can drive an entire fleet of hummers to and from work every day hanging your ass out of the window and farting styrofoam packing peanuts into the atmosphere and still not cause a fraction of the damage that one […] baby causes to this planet.”

Making such a bold statement containing a fleet of hummers, the very symbol of excess consumerism with their bombastic size and large fuel-usage and then stating that such unnecessary usage by far is not comparable to the carbon footprint created from having another child is for me a statement worth thinking about and a  truly inconvenient truth.

Sådärja. Nu ska det tjänas storkovan på bloggskrivandet här iallafall!

Nej, men skämt åsido, skrev upp mig för en betainvite till det nya mikrobetalningssystemet flattr igår och idag trillade den ner i mailboxen. Hade tänkt förklara det med egna ord, men jag antar att deras video fungerar bra mycket bättre.

Så nu, med en hisnande insats på 2 € i månaden, har jag tänkt börja flattra bloggar, videoklipp, musik och annat user generated content jag gillar. Eftersom jag än så länge inte själv skapat något internet-content av större värde misstänker jag att det här kommer bli något utav ett förlustprojekt, men som man säger här på internets:

Och dessutom kanske mina kakbitar kommer någon till godo

Vill någon ha en invit är det bara att hojta till också så bjuckar jag (förutsatt att jag förstått sidan rätt dvs).
